My legs and feet have just about recovered from taking part & completing my first half marathon. It was a spectacularly beautiful morning in Cardiff last Sunday, a frosty cold welcome to our capital city quicky warmed up as the sun rose and shone down on 18,000 runners from all walks of life! With an estimated crowd of supporters in the region of 30,000+ the atmosphere around the route was electric! I’ve never been involved in such an event of this scale and I’m very proud to have experienced the delights of the Cardiff 1/2 Marathon!
Approximately 10 miles into the 13.1 mile race the pain really started to take effect, seemed like every muscle in my legs were in pain after that point! Miles 11, 12 & 13 were the slowest of the lot but with the route passing right infront the gates of the cemetery where Nan rests I was given that bit of determination I needed to drag myself to the finishing line!
I wish I was able to stop and take pictures on the way round as it was a fantastic course and the crowds equally as great! Highlights for me were the starting area – seeing the 18,000 strong group of runners snaking round the corner of Cardiff Castle, the corner of Penarth and crossing the barrage, through Cardiff Bay’s famous waterfront and passed the Millennium Centre!
I managed to complete it in a respectable time (I hope) of 2 hours 15minutes, a time I’d like to improve on when I do my next one!!
Just a quick update for you.. The fundraising has gone incredibly well so far and I’m delighted to announce that the total thus far is now at £7440…!! Truly unbelievable and I’m so grateful to everyone who’s donated/taken part in the Velindre fundraising events so far!
In other news, MikesHike2013 now has a team of fundraisers! Branwen Evans, Geraint Walters, Matt Fisher and the Finance boys have all set up their own JustGiving pages, set themselves challenges and have so far raised a huge £837.50!
Our team page can be seen at http://www.justgiving.com/teams/MikesHike2013
With that in mind I’m pleased to announce that I’ve increased the target to £10,000 which if reached will mean that I’ll no longer be on the ‘Trek of a Lifetime’ but will instead take part in the ‘Trek with Legends’ which is led by Welsh rugby legends Shane Williams, Martyn Williams & Stephen Jones!
So with 9 months to go before sponsorship has to be in I’ve got a further £2500+ to raise! So keep your eyes peeled and watched this space for details of fundraisers in the future!
The closest of which is a Pub Quiz at The Otley pub in Treforest, tomorrow night from 8pm just £1 entry!
Further details to follow shortly of our Ladies Christmas Shopping & Pamper Evening at Taffs Well RFC, Ladies Day at Stern Clothing plus many more!
Congratulations to Stern Clothing and the Harlem Globe Otters who were the victorious team at our first ever MikesHike2013 Football Tournament in aid of Velindre Cancer Centre!
They finished top of the pile having played in the final against My Team, and winning with a deserved 3-1 score line when the final whiste blew! It was a great afternoon for all involved, fantastic to see some of the younger children supporting their Dad’s from the balcony, and we finished up with £500 going towards my Kilimanjaro total!
Thank you to all the teams that took part – Locomotive Lumpfoot, Tiger Tiger, Bunch of Beauties, My Team, Farcelona and the winners the Harlem Globe Otters.
With so many positive comments regarding the event its certainly a possibility that we’ll make this tournament an annual event, hopefully even bigger an better with more teams getting involved an even more money raised!
Here is just a small selection of the great photographs, courtesy of Antea Photography who has done an amazing job for us! As if that wasnt enough they’ve also pledged that a portion of EVERY photograph purchased from that day will be donated to Velindre via MikesHike2013 Kilimanjaro total!!
This Saturday (6th October) is going to be a busy one down Cardiff!
We’re taking over the Cardiff House of Sport as eight 5 a side teams descend on Leckwith to take part in the first MikesHike2013 Football Tournament in aid of Velindre Cancer Centre!
All teams are reaching minimum sponsorship requirements to enter the competition, some going the extra mile and raising way past the minimum amount required so hopefully we’ll get a tidy sum after it’s all done and dusted!!
We’re lucky enough to get a few special guests to attend and also entertain us! Starting with Welsh rugby legend and Velindre patron, Martyn Williams who is giving his footwork a test instead of his hands!
While we’re on the subject of footwork we’ve also got World Record holder Ash Randall performing a freestyle football display before the final! So we can all expect to see some UNBELIEVABLE TEKKERS on show!!
All this will be going on whilst our ears are treated to the sounds of DJ Moses Midas of BBC Radio 1xtra who’s been described as “The Audio Equivalent of Braille” along with DJ Tariq Switch, both of whom are kindly donating their afternoons to ensure a carnival atmosphere for us all!
There will be photo opportunities with everyone mentioned so far as well as for the teams involved thanks to Anthony Barker of Antea Photography who’s also donating his time free of charge. Anthony has personal knowledge of just how important Velindre’s work is as a close relative of his is currently being treated there. Unfortunately an all too familiar story.
I must mention the following as the day doesnt end when the final whistle blows! Once the victorious team has lifted the trophy we’re all heading back to Tiger Tiger Cardiff where the champions will enjoy a bar tab courtesy of their hosts! Tiger Tiger are also laying on a buffet for all the players and family members who join us for an ice bucket (of beers) instead of an ice bath! So huge thanks to Tiger Tiger, particularly Jonathan Saunders & Elliott Cantor, for being such good sports and giving the teams that extra bit of incentive whilst also helping to make the event as much a success as possible!
Everyones support going into this Saturday is incredibly appreciated and hopefully the total amount raised will do it justice!!
Delighted to have ran the full distance, despite shocking weather conditions that would test even the most experienced runners! Even happier that I was able to record a personal best of 55 minutes 42 seconds! Massive thank you should go to everyone who organised such a well run event, the large number of spectators – friends and families of the runners but also the locals who braved the stormy weather to clap us on! And also the volunteers at the finish line, absolutely drenched from the rain but welcoming everyone over the finish line with a smile along with our goody bags, t-shirts and medals!
Congratulations to all the other runners, 4000+ I think, the majority of which were all running for different charities, and the weather did little to dampen the spirits of everyone taking part!
Swansea 10k 2012 can confidently consider itself a success and I’m very proud to have taken part!
This Sunday i’ll be taking part in my first official race – The Swansea 10k, although I’m under no illusion that i’ll be even close to competing to win it!
It’ll be great to see how it’s all organised though, and brilliant as a training exercise for the Cardiff Half Marathon next month!
Hopefully it’ll stay dry and i’m sure it’ll be a great day for all those involved!
Please if you’d like to donate and make all the training worthwhile, go to http://www.justgiving.com/Michael-Locke or you can text LOCK70 £1 to 70070 (or £2, £5, £10) all proceeds to Velindre Cancer Centre
Friday 17th August saw our biggest event yet come together at The Village Hotel, Cardiff. A fantastic total of 93 guests enjoyed their 3 course course meals, the amazing singing talents of Annelies and the fantastic post dinner anecdotes of Rick O’Shea!
It was incredible to see so many friends, family, colleagues old and new all dolled up, suited and booted and enjoying their night, knowing that so much money was being raised at the same time!
The amazing raffle and auction items all went to satisfied guests and I cant describe the night as anything other than a success!
The total raised from ticket sales, raffle tickets, auction proceeds, donations on the night and 10% of the bar takings (Thanks to The Village again for that) took us to an outstanding figure of £3,600!!
Such an astonashing amount we had to tally it up three times the next morning to make sure we weren’t adding it up wrong! So huge thanks are in order! To everyone who attended, all the businesses that sponsored our programmes by buying adverts, all the conpanies and individuals who donated the raffle prizes and auction items! I was too busy on the night to take photographs unfortunately but I’ve been sent a few that you can see below! My legs are still hurting from the lunges and I cant remember where the sunglasses came from haha
